A hands-on, fun and educational experience for all ages. Great for families. Learn about Bees and Bee Hives, then get sticky with this interactive, hands-on activity. STAGE 1
- The Invention of the Langstroth Hive
- Introduction of the European Honeybee to New Zealand
- Construction of Honey Comb
- Propolis creation and benefits for humans
- Drones, Workers, Queen Bee and Bee Behavior
- Re-Queening and Royal Jelly
Your Beekeeper will run over the history of the Beehives we use in New Zealand, and explain how a colony builds honey comb, converts nectar into honey and they operate seamlessly as a colony within each hive. We'll also cover the basics of propolis, beeswax and Royal Jelly - and how these amazing compounds are produced by bees. Then you will begin working with a fresh frame of honey.
STAGE 2
UNCAPPING & SPINNING
Remove the ‘capping’ from your frame to expose the delicious honey underneath. Then we will spin your frame in a powered extractor. Watch through the clear lid to see your honey flying out under the centrifugal force. Ready to pour out the ‘honey gate’.
STAGE 3
FILTERING & BOTTLING
Open the 'Honey Gate' and watch your honey pour into a filter to remove any beeswax. Once filtered, its ready to bottle. You can lick the honey off your fingers now, and get your photo taken for your personalized honey label.
